" REMEMBER LOT'S WIFE " by J W Luman Very rarely has so much been said in so few words. This statement of divine warning came just after Jesus said "The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it." (Luke 17:22-37) The warning to believers is that at the great revelation of Christ, (verse 30) each believer will be judged as to where he stands at that time. Do not be caught looking back! THE THREEFOLD STAND The stand of the believer is threefold, and is found in Ephesians 6:10- 17. "Stand against the wiles of the devil." In verse 11, the word "wiles" means methods, disguises, strategies, cunning devices. Satan will come at you in many forms, even as an angel of light. He will say that this is Christ, or that is Christ. He will never point to the Cross, where dwells the power and wisdom of God. He will always point to some part of your own life and call that Christ. It looks good, feels good, smells good, so it must be Christ! Most people have the idea that the devil is all that which is bad on earth; and therefore, Jesus must be all that which is good on earth. To the contrary, the scriptures declare that the first man was after the earth, earthy, but that the second man is the Lord from heaven. He is not earthy at all, whether it be good or bad. "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on the things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:1-3) Notice we are not to set our hearts, thoughts and desires on the things on the earth, whether they be good or bad. There is nothing in Christ with which Satan can reduce you, but one look back to the earth, and you are reduced already! You will either hate the earth, or you will have it; there is no in between. You are either pressing toward, or you are looking back! Paul said that he was crucified unto the world, and that the world was crucified unto him. (Galatians 6:14) The world had buried him and he had buried the world. He was of another Life and Kingdom. The second stand is, "to withstand". Many voices will call out to you, many snares and traps will be laid in your path. Except you walk in the light as He is in the light, you will surely fall. Except you have "ears to hear" only what the Spirit says you will surely be deceived. You will take just one 'last look', or say just one last good bye, or perform just one last obligation, or do just one last favor. Look back for one moment, and you will miss Him! 'But Lord, I only looked away for a second.' But He comes in the twinkling of an eye! 'Lord, I was only distracted for a moment.' But he that is mindful of the flesh is an enemy of God! 'Lord, I just glanced over my shoulder.' But he who looks back is not fit! 'But Lord, I only did it so that I could minister to a person.' If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the pit! DO NOT LOOK BACK! The third and complete stand is "to stand". Having done all to stand, then stand being clothed upon with Christ! Stand and others will stand, also go back and somebody will go with you. "Nevertheless when the Son of Man cometh shall he find faith on the earth?"(Luke 18:8) If we stand, we stand in the fulness of the faith of the Son of God. Shall He find believers so standing? I believe that we are fast approaching the time (day of the Lord) that only those who are found "standing" will stand indeed. There is no indecision to this position of faith. We are not still fighting the desire to go back, and we are not still contending with the voices that would cause us to look back. Having put these things behind us and having our faces turned toward the Lord, we stand in the knowledge of the Lord! The building is as sure as the rock upon which it is built - both are one. We standing in Him, and He standing in us, and we shall know Him because we shall see Him as He is! THE TWOFOLD SIGN In Luke, Jesus gives us a complete witness of the time of the day of the Lord. (Luke 17:26) "And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man." And verses 28-30, "Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot...Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed." In Noah and Lot we see the complete witness of the Church - those who hear and receive, and those who will not hear and cannot receive the Lord God by the Christ which shall come. In Noah we see the one hundred and twenty years of preaching and preparing his family (church) for the flood. One hundred and twenty is the number for the "end of all flesh." Through the preaching of Noah and the life of Noah, the ark was built by His family (church). They were ready. They were prepared for the flood. There was an "end of all flesh" in his family, and there came an end "to all" flesh upon the earth. Noah and his family inherited a new earth, and God made covenant with them. Noah (The Leadership) prepared his family (the church), and the very flood which destroyed all the earth, was their salvation from all the earth. They being warned of God, and "hearing" the word, entered into the ark, which they, by the "revealed" word, built. Only God knew the pattern of the ark, but he revealed it to Noah and he declared it to his family, and they together as one built the ark. "For we are laborers together (as one) with God; ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building...For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:9-11) "For we are his workmanship... In whom ye also are builded together (as one) for an habitation of God through the Spirit." (Ephesians 1:10,22) Dear friends, this is the New Man of Ephesians 2:14-18. He shall rise up above the earth, and with Him is the covenant of God established forever and forever! WE IN HIM AND HE IN US, HEAD AND BODY, EVEN ONE NEW MAN! Not one member of Noah's family was lost, but not so with Lot. Lot was saved not by his faith, but by the faith of Abraham. Lot lived in the world, compromised with the world, and lost his power of right discernment. His family paid the price! Such are many leaders in the church today. They have desired the best that the earth has to offer, but have rejected the things of the Kingdom of God. They judge by the senses the will of God, but are void of the revelation of Jesus Christ. They have not the mind of Christ. Many of them even are vexed, and preach against the things of the world to a degree, but they know not the things of the Kingdom. They are not able to discern between flesh and Spirit (Adam and Christ; the world and the true Kingdom of God); going to church, instead of living as the Church in all things. They allow the Body of Christ to mix with the world. They preach the "rapture" as an escape from the world. But Paul preached the Cross as their escape from the world! I AM CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST, and we have been raised up together and been made to sit together in Christ; so much so, that we are not in the earth, but rather we are now in Christ! The church at large does not understand this most glorious truth, because the leadership has the mind of the flesh, and the spirit of the world. While the statement "Remember Lot's wife" is a warning to the church, it is nothing less than a stern rebuke to the leadership! Lot did not prepare his family in the midst of Sodom. Their desire was not in heavenly places, but in the lusts of the flesh and the affairs of Sodom. Lot had made Sodom his home! He involved his family in the life of Sodom, and his daughters married men of Sodom. Lot may have built on a right foundation, (the faith of Abraham) but his building did not stand the test. (1 Corinthians 3:11-15) With no discernment left, helpless and at the mercy of the men of Sodom, Lot had to be "pushed" out of the city. He was not a leader, little wonder that no one wanted to follow! He made no impact on Sodom, and he lost his family to boot! Many church leaders become involved in the world through the excuse of ministering. The fact of the matter is, that where there is no contrast there is no ministry. We will never "light up" the kingdom of darkness. We are translated out of it, and into the Kingdom of the Son! His Kingdom is light. It is true that we are to shine, but we shine as the Kingdom of God in contrast to the kingdom of darkness. Light does not, and will not mix with darkness. Darkness is the absence of light; there is no light in darkness. We are light in the Lord, and those who will see are separated unto that light, drawn out of darkness, and joined to the Lord. The Church must be told that she is not of this world, but that she is the own Body of Jesus Christ! And He has but One Body, and that Body has but One Life and Light! We have no life in Sodom. There is nothing to look back to. (Luke 17:33) Our life is Christ! "And when he who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory." (Colossians 3:1-4) We are no longer of Sodom. "For if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation, old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new... There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 3:28) We do not even have kin folks living there any more. "So then brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free." (Galatians 4:31) "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God." (Ephesians 2:19) "God is our father, we are His Sons." (Galatians 3:26,29; 1 John 3:1-4; Galatians 4:1-6) We have nothing left in Sodom; for all things are become new, and old things are passed away! There is no reason to look back! We are debtors not to the flesh to live after the flesh, and if we do, we shall surely die! (Romans 8:12-13) What caused Lot's wife to look back? First we have seen that she had a 'faithless' husband. He did not have enough faith to save himself, let alone his wife. A compromising husband - he chose to pitch his tent in Sodom, rather than suffer the tests of Canaan. A lustful husband - he desired the riches of the cities and what they could offer him. A weak husband - he sought the safety (seemingly) of the walled cities. (Genesis 13:1-13) Lot became a man of substance in Sodom, but he lost out in the Kingdom of God. As the head goes, so goes the body. Notice Lot's wife is not named. The Church bears the name of her Head, as does the wife her husband. The church has taken unto her a head, or husband, likened unto Lot; and she will pay the price. Oh! for the Word of God to cleanse and purge the head, and establish in it the mind of Christ, that Christ indeed be Head! Then the Body will be filled with, and motivated by the Spirit of Christ in all things, doing all things in the name of her Head, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. She looked back because she had the "mind of Sodom". "And truly if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to return." (Hebrews 11:15) "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh...For to be carnally minded is death...Because the carnal mind is enmity against God." (Romans 8:5-8) She was mindful of an old life, its people, places and things. She lived in the past, not knowing that old things are passed away. Therefore, she was enticed to look back by the very things that God called cursed, the things that He destroyed, and she became like them. She looked back because she did not have the mind of Christ! She had no faith. There was no faith in her head, and there was no faith in her. Notice in Hebrews 11, "But without faith it is impossible to please God... By faith Noah... By faith Abraham..." (Hebrews 11:6-8) But Lot is not herein mentioned! Dear friend, who's mind have you? Who is your Head? Who's Body are you? Who's servant are you? Have you faith? When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith in you? The Head is faithful to His own Body, and the Husband to His own wife. "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word." (Romans 10:17) Only by the revelation of the living Word of God Himself, in you, can you hear what God hath said in His Son. We as His Body, live His Life by His Faith. (Galatians 2:20) Body of Christ, do not be as Lot's wife. Join yourself to that Head which is Christ, wherein dwells the faith of Christ! She looked back because she had no vision of purpose! Where there is no vision the people perish. "Seeing we have this ministry we faint not..." (2 Corinthians 4:1) "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels..." (2 Corinthians 4:7) This vision of purpose has been taken away from the Church. She has no purpose in herself, so she looks to the world for purpose. She is void of wisdom, understanding and knowledge. These are the three "cards" of faith by which God's House is built. The head is to minister faith, "full faith" to the Body. (Ephesians 4:11-16) We seem to have a lot of "husband rallies", but the wife (Body, Church) remains ignorant and void of vision. We have a lot of 'personal' ministries, but the Church is void of ministry and purpose. The scripture says, "Remember Lot's wife." I would like to say, "Lot, remember your wife; where is she?" Where is she in the knowledge of the Lord? Is she teaching her children the faith of Christ? Does she have the mind of Christ? Is she filled with the vision, or is she void of the knowledge and revelation of Christ? If she is void, she can do nothing more than look back! "In the day of the Son of man it shall be as in the days of Noah, and as in the days of Lot." Who's wife are you? "Remember Lot's wife!" (Luke 17:32)
